About Me

Brian Murphy

Hi! My name is Brian Murphy. I am currently a Third Year Ph.D. candidate in economics at the University of Houston. I am interested in the economics of education, labor economics, gender economics and the economics of crime, in both high- and low-income countries.

My research currently focuses on educational factors within the United States, such as school location, school closures, school choice, and institutional factors, and how they affect both college major decisions and labor market outcomes. Additionally, I research school spending and how schools make decisions, which have large implications on student outcomes. Outside of education, I research crime, with a current interest in how the spacial distribution of crime changes over time in cities that use algorithms to distribute their officers.

Outside of economics, I am a volunteer in the community. During my undergraduate, I won the Flubacher Award, which is given to an individual who demonstrates a commitment to social justice. Additionally, I am involved in the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia, Special Olympics and started "Neighborhood Tutoring", a tutoring service for students in inner city Philadelphia.
